1. Take a scenic and historic driving tour of South Kingstown

One of the best ways to get a lay of the land and a sense of the history of South Kingstown is to take a driving tour of several of South Kingstown’s 31 sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including four historic districts. The tour begins and ends in one of these districts: Peace Dale. The tour then makes its way through the remaining three historic districts of Kingston, Wakefield, and Usquepaug Road Historic District. Other memorable stops include the Peace Dale Public Library, the University of Rhode Island, the Kingston Railroad Station, and Ministerial Road.

Along the way, you can check out the Kingston Free Library, marvel at the art gallery at Old Washington County Courthouse and Courthouse Center for the Arts, watch a rug-weaving demonstration at the Fayerweather House, climb the Wooden Observation Tower at MacSparran Hill, and wonder at the gorgeous stained glass Peace Dale Congregational Church.

2. Explore Downtown Wakefield

Along the revitalized Saugatucket River, the historic Wakefield Main Street features some of the best restaurants in South Kingstown, along with several shops and plenty of charm. The legendary Mews Tavern features 69 beers on tap, along with a robust menu. Other restaurants include Tong-Ta Thai, Rachel’s Cafe, Pasquale’s Pizzeria Napoletana, and Trattoria Romana South.

For entertainment, visit the Contemporary Theatre Company for concerts, plays, and more. During the summer, enjoy the RiverFire with free concerts on Main Street. Keep exploring, and you’ll find boutiques selling women’s and children’s clothing, beautiful jewelry, special gifts, and home decor, along with a hand-blown glass studio and more. Paired with the stunning views, there’s no shortage of activities in charming Downtown Wakefield.

3. Enjoy America’s favorite pastime

During the summer baseball season, make sure to catch an Ocean State Waves baseball game. A member of the New England College Baseball League, Waves players come from some of the country’s top collegiate programs and provide the locals with affordable family fun. Families can also host children’s birthday parties at the games or participate in the annual summer camp for young baseball players 8 to 14 years old.

4. Hit the beach

South County, Rhode Island, is known for its beautiful beaches, and South Kingstown is home to more than 10 glorious miles of them. The Town Beach at Matunuck welcomes visitors with a boardwalk, 1,300 feet of sandy beaches, a playground, two picnic areas, and a seasonally available pavilion with showers and restrooms.

If you’re on a surfing expedition, head down to the East Matunuck State Beach for strong surf and 144 acres of beach featuring a modern pavilion, wheelchair accessibility, a large parking lot with electric vehicle chargers, food and gift vendors, a lifeguard tower, and shade gazebos. Moonstone Beach is more of a locals’ beach that’s a little less crowded than Town Beach or East Matunuck State Beach. Moonstone Beach is especially great for bird watchers, as it includes four viewing platforms along with more than two miles of nature trails. The area is home to 300 bird species, such as herons, egrets, and the threatened Piping Plover.

South Kingstown also features seven dog-friendly beaches. Pet owners can head to Compass Rose Beach, Mohegan Cliffs, Blue Beach, Point Judith, Sachuest Beach, Block Island Beaches, or Narragansett Town Beach for a fun outing with their fuzzy four-legged friend.
